In September we attended the Hubspot Inbound conference, and as usual it was loaded with great insights and learnings for marketers. As B2B marketers we really focused on sessions that would improve our skills at delivering for our clients. To that end, we attended the presentation “What Ryan Renolds Taught us About Advertising,” by MNTN and we found it to be an engaging approach that can help marketers cut through the “digital noise” and make their content memorable.

Marketing business to business (B2B) doesn’t mean that your marketing content has to be dry and boring. In fact, entertaining and engaging essential tools for your strategy in order to effectively reach your target audience.

In this session, MNTN, an advertising company that applies PPC methodology to television, provided a great example with a commercial that included informative humor. By utilizing Steve-O from Jackass to introduce the features of their platform’s services while capturing the audience’s attention with comedic relief. Similarly, Hubspot incorporated humor with their CRM ad with a pirate-themed sketch, once again proving that entertainment is a great addition to any B2B marketing campaign.

Research and Targeting is Still Gold

Most marketers know the key to any successful marketing campaign is understanding your audience. Take the time to research who they are, what they need, and why they should be interested in your product or services. Once you understand your target market, you can craft an ad campaign that speaks directly to them. This will help ensure that your message resonates with them and piques their interest in your company.

Entertainment is the Goal But Simplicity Is Key

B2B marketing can sometimes be dry and a bit dull. Through entertainment, you can draw in the consumer without sacrificing informative content. If you take this approach then you need to simplify your message so it is easy to digest and understand.

Tip #1: Your message should be clear and concise so that it can quickly capture the attention of potential customers. Try focusing on one key benefit of your product or service instead of trying to cram too much information into one advertisement. If you do decide to include multiple benefits, make sure each one stands out by using visuals like images or videos as well as text copy.

Tip #2: Try using active language such as “discover” or “learn” rather than passive language like “find out about” or “get more information about.” This will help keep readers engaged with your ad rather than losing interest halfway through reading it.

By finding unique ways to capture attention while ensuring a message is communicated clearly, B2B marketing can offer an invaluable opportunity to reach an audience that many other styles of marketing are unable to do.
